In The News

An Underused Source of Extra-Renal Organs
According to the UNOS News Bureau, 5/07/2007, researchers discussed their findings at the American Transplant Congress on the use of organs from known drug users. In most cases, organs from registered donors with a known drug addiction, (cigarettes, alcohol dependency, cocaine, IV drugs and other drug use) are not recovered because of said use. A comparison was done on the survival and functionality of liver and heart recovery rates from donors with a history of drug use and that of a non-drug user. The findings showed that there was a small difference statistically, but the clinical differences in survival was small, signifying that there may possibly be another significant source of transplantable organs available.

Medication Errors Common for Transplant Patients
In the March journal of Archives of Surgery, a research team from Yale University School of Medicine identified 149 medication errors in 93 liver, kidney and pancreas transplant patients who were taking an average of about 11 medications each.

It seems that the most common problem stemed from the patient themselves, followed by prescription and delivery errors, the next was availability errors in the cases of patients not having enough time to replenish there medication. These errors resulted in adverse events, including: hospitalization, outpatient procedures, episodes of rejection and failed transplants. The root causes of the medication errors were the patient (68%); health care providers (27% including 10% by transplant teams) and financial issues (5%). The study authors stated medication errors are often the result of communication breakdowns. It is suggested that centralized records and streamlined methods could improve the processes, which would likely give patients confidence in the medical staffs ability to help them.

   Message form the President:

I want to personally thank the speakers, attendees and everyone involved in making this year’s gala fundraiser and education sessions a success. A host of physicians, students, and corporate representatives from various parts of the world attended the Gala and World Summit hosted by the IAOD and Wayne State University School of Medicine. We hope to continuously bring information to the organ donation and transplantation community as well as recognize and celebrate the joy of new life bought about through the gift of life.

Next year’s gala, April 25, 2008, will be in recognition of the children around the world who suffer from the lack of awareness and willingness to donate life.

In closing, my sincere gratitude goes to all those who continue to open their hearts, answer their phones and lend their support to the IAOD, for without you we would not be able to do what we do.

2007 “Celebrating Life After Transplant” Gala and World Summit on Organ Donation:

We are please to say the reviews have been great. There were interesting dialogues bought about by topics on transplant tourism and illegal harvesting of organs in various parts of the country, as well as new technologies and issues such as first person consent. Attendees of the Summit received a maximum of 10.25 CME credits for attending the complete day and a half sessions.

The “Celebrating Life After Transplant” Gala was extremely exciting; from the dancers escorting the celebrated recipients, to our auction and raffle drawing, and of course our event would not be complete without the famous saxophonist, Randy Scott. The new addition of the evening, dancing after the program, was well received and we hope will next year become one of the highlights of the evening.

Our gracious, Corporate Award Benefactor recipient, Tom LaSorda, President and CEO of the Chrysler Group was eloquent when discussing the heart warming story of his sister’s struggle after two heart attacks and her need for a transplant, as well as his gratitude to those who have helped his family through this trying time.

We thank DaimlerChrysler, GM, Ford and the Ritz Carlton for their generous contributions to our auction. As always, our annual gala would not be a success without the continued support of all of our sponsors: DaimlerChrysler, GM, Ford, Oakwood, DMC, Henry Ford Health System, BCBSM, Epoch Restaurant Group, Roche, Wayne State University School of Medicine, Astellas, University of Michigan Health System, Beaumont, the Karoub Family, in addition to our many community sponsors, and WWJ 950 our media sponsor.

Unfortunately, we were unable to provide syllabus to the attendees of the Summit, however those who would like a copy of the presentations can go to our website, www.iaod.org/events. A video stream of the entire two days is available for viewing.
